The Queensland Worker's Family Cottage: A new extension to a traditional style timber home. A deft use of levels creates a connected, functional and beautiful family home that is also connected to and celebrates the surrounding suburb. New materials invoke the rustic and resilient qualities of the original cottage, and support the reuse of existing elements like the beautiful stained glass windows.

The new extension provides two new levels offset to the existing two levels to break down the upstairs/downstairs paradigm and create a greater sense of space and connection. The use of external features such as weatherboards and balcony balustrades on the interior creates a layered spacial experience that further enhances a sense of space and openness.

The extension carefully manages light and air to provide maximum natural comfort all year round. And the resilient and practical material palette including metal cladding and concrete slabs are a homage to the practical begins of the Queensland Worker’s Cottage typology.
